Inside Line Promotions – JEFFERSON, S.D. (May 20, 2020) – One of the hardest things for a young driver to do is bounce back from a bad performance.
Trey Burke, who is only 15-years-old, was seeking confidence when he rolled into New Raceway Park on Sunday for a Sprint Series of Nebraska event. It’s understandable considering he didn’t qualify for the main event the last time he raced.
None of that mattered during the feature on Sunday. Burke started sixth and put together a solid run on his way to a fifth-place finish, which was his first top-five result of the 2020 season.
“It’s huge,” he said. “It’s the little things that mean a lot. There were a lot of cars and I was a little lost on where to run on the track.
“I wasn’t feeling that confident. After a really good hot-lap session in South Dakota, it really gave me a boost. Winning the heat race and getting a top five really helped.”
It was Burke’s first visit to New Raceway Park and it didn’t take long for him to get used to the configuration or the tacky surface. Burke started on the pole of his heat race and held on for the win. In the feature, the young driver kept the leaders in sight and came away with a confidence-building result.
“The first thing me and crew chief Brad Benic do when we get to a new track is compare it to other places we’ve been,” Burke said. “By doing that I can mentally prepare myself on how I’m going to run it. I think it really helps because I’m not focusing on where to run as much as how aggressive I can be.
“We are definitely happy about our finish. The track was really different and it rained all weekend and was misting during hot laps. The track stayed tacky and a little rough, which was challenging, but we got it figured out.”
Next up for Burke is a two-race weekend with events on Friday at Monarch Motor Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas, with the Texas Sprint Series and on Saturday at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla. And now that he has a top five under his belt, Burke’s confidence level is rising.
“I’m a lot more confident,” he said. “I know what is going to happen and we are starting to dial in this setup a little more. I’m starting to adjust to how to drive the car and everybody on the team is a lot happier.”

Not only are we running his shocks, we have him with us with all of his knowledge to help us out. He helps me out on where to run, helps my dad out with what to do, and he really knows what he is doing. We wouldn’t have gotten all of the good finishes we did last year without him. The shocks are really good, and Brad can assess what to do over the phone without even seeing it. He is really great to work with.”
