Inside Line Promotions – BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (June 17, 2020) – Trey Burke took a huge step in his racing career last weekend.
Since the 2020 season started in February, the 15-year-old driver has been participating in the Road to Indy development program in an effort to prepare for the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series.
The classes and test sessions were finally over and it was time to race a road course on Saturday and Sunday at NCM Motorsports Park.
Burke did more than impress. After finishing third in Friday’s 30-minute main event, he returned Sunday and charged from seventh to record an exciting victory on a wet course.
“We were freakin’ pumped,” he said. “It was sort of raining before we went out, so overall it was like being in the rain.
“I think the dirt experience helped in that a lot of guys were slipping and sliding, and I was able to get it hooked up. We had a race pace that was two seconds faster than anyone else so I think the dirt was a big factor in getting the win.”
Burke showed up a few days early to take another advanced class. It included numerous practice sessions that paid off when racing went green.
In his opening qualifying session, which lasted 20 minutes, Burke was fifth quickest. He picked off a couple of cars and placed third in the race rundown.
For Sunday’s event, Burke slipped a bit to seventh. It didn’t matter in the 30-minute race as he charged by his fellow competitors to collect the victory.
“I was surprised,” Burke said. “For a lot of kids, this is their second or third year. Some are even test-driving Formula 4 cars, so to come in and get a third place, which we were already happy about, and then a win, it was great.
“Finishing third (the first day) gave me a lot of confidence because there are six or seven of us at the same skill level. It’s a matter of who can make the right plays. We are all pretty even in qualifying, all within in a tenth of each other. So whoever can get the most passes and play their cards right is going to be the winner.”
Burke’s next race on pavement will be July 14-16 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, N.J.
“We’re ready to go after it again,” he said. “It was a huge confidence boost and we’re just waiting to get going. The track isn’t on iRacing. I will be watching YouTube so when I get there I will know what is going on.”
