Inside Line Promotions – BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 21, 2021) – Trey Burke will have an opportunity to rebound this weekend in Florida following a frustrating opening weekend with the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship.
The Joe Dooling Autosports driver battled a fuel problem last weekend at Barber Motorsports Park, which hosted the first two rounds of the season for the series that is sanctioned by IndyCar.
“We had a fuel issue,” Burke said. “I missed both qualifying sessions and I only got to race one of the races. I couldn’t even make a lap in qualifying sessions. About half the fuel pump was clogged. It was all gummed up. We changed the filter and pump after qualifying. It ran enough in the first race. We even took it apart and cleaned it for the second race, but it gummed back up.”
Burke advanced from 26th to 20th in the first feature on Saturday before being credited with 26th in the second race that he was unable to join.
“Within two or three laps I got to 17th,” he said of the first feature. “As the race went on I don’t think it ran right because of the fuel issue. That’s just part of it. Sometimes you can control things and other times that’s how it is. It’s still a learning process. Given our situation, with all the bad stuff and with it being the first race, there was still good to take away from it.”
Burke doesn’t have to wait long to get the sour taste out of his mouth as he’s slated to compete this Friday and Saturday on the Streets of St. Petersburg in St. Petersburg.
“They shut down part of the city, build the track and we go,” he said. “We get one practice session that’s 20 minutes. We’ll approach it like any other track, corner by corner. If you mess up you’re in the wall so I’d imagine there will be some wrecking. Hopefully we can get through the weekend clean.”
