Inside Line Promotions – ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (June 22, 2021) – Trey Burke enjoyed his weekend of competing on the biggest track on the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship schedule last weekend.
The Joe Dooling Autosports driver posted a pair of career-best 17th-place finishes during Rounds 9 and 10 of the season as he made his debut at the 4.014-mile road course.
“It was a really good weekend,” he said. “We made some adjustments going into the weekend. I think it clearly paid off.
“We had Sage Karam driver coaching and we got an engineer. I think it really helped. We’re starting to form a team more than just a few guys working on the car. These are all essentials that everybody else has and we’re slowly building our team up.”
Burke noted that the advice and knowledge from Karam paid dividends immediately.
“It was great,” he said. “It was the best. I absolutely loved it. We have him coming back for Mid-Ohio in a couple of weeks. I think it all comes from the fact that he’s run the series. He knows how it is. We needed someone who has been here and done it. Having that much more experience is great. The more we get to work with him I think the improvements will continue increasing.”
Burke advanced from 20th to a career-best 17th during Friday’s race.
“It was crazy,” he said. “People were all over the place. With big, long straightaways everybody is trying to pass. We made it through and that was huge right there. I passed one car and just sat in the back of our group and people would make mistakes, which would allow me to move up. If it I was up to me I would have probably been impatient and joined them, but Sage said to be patient and they will make mistakes and it worked out that way.”
Saturday’s weekend finale featured a run from 23rd to 17th for Burke.
“Our entire row got brake checked so it was a mess at the start,” he said. “We lost a nose wing. There were pieces of cars all over the track. There was a full-course yellow so we were able to fix it. As the race went on it got more chaotic. It got to the point where there were wings and parts of cars on the track.
“I liked racing there on that big of a track. Other tracks we’ve gone to have only had one or two passing areas. Road America adds three or four with the long straightaways leading into heavy braking areas.”
The next Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship event is July 1-4 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
