Inside Line Promotions – LEXINGTON, Ohio (July 6, 2021) – Trey Burke tied his career-best Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship result with a 17th-place showing on Saturday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

It marked the third time the Joe Dooling Autosports driver has earned that result in a four-race span.

The three-race weekend began on Thursday when Burke qualified 20th quickest overall. That put him in the 20th starting position for Friday’s race.

“There wasn’t a lot of passing,” he said after placing 22nd. “After the first lap or two it’s single file and you wait for someone to make a mistake in order to be able to pass them.”

Burke started on the outside of the 10th row for Saturday’s event and he gained a trio of positions for the 17th-place outing.

“I had a good start, but I got stuck behind a car that was really tough to pass for like 14 of the 20 laps,” he said. “I set him up and waited for him to make a mistake. I finally got in front of him. Then the last two or three laps I was having pressure from another car behind me, but we held on.”

The finale on Sunday ended with a 25th-place result.

“The third race was going to be our best finish,” he said. “I think it was going to be a top 10. After the second race Sage (Karam) and our engineer said I needed to be more aggressive. I did that and was running 12th or 13th. Another driver decided not to turn a few times. He kept hitting me and it knocked the valve stem off a tire. By the time it went flat I was already past the pit-in entrance. We ended up spinning and we lost a lap from that.

“A big thing is trying to finish the races so I can learn more from there. I’m being aggressive, but I don’t want to be too aggressive where I do something to knock me out of the races. Now we’re at the point where I can start to be more aggressive since I’m more familiar and comfortable with the car.”

The next Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship event is Aug. 27-29 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, N.J. It will feature three rounds and will be the penultimate event of the season.
